Experiences

On this page you will find the stories from students who participated in the Student Achievement Program. All students who have taken my workshops have inspired me, year in year out, and shown me that anything is possible, for anyone, at any time. Thank you.

“Since high school I was overwhelmed with a variety of ways to organize my studies, balance my life and set my goals. The S.A.P was able to cut through the bullshit and focus on the individual, allowing me to organize my own schedule, tailored to my needs. A year later I still use the framework and skills taught to me.Tobias’s unique approach is what sets this program apart from so many others.

When it comes to academics, the aim which has been embedded in us is simple, get good grades. The part which is usually left out is HOW to reach that goal, enter the S.A.P. The courses focuses on breaking down large tasks into weekly digestible doses, while appealing to your individual needs outside of your studies. Tobias has been through this struggle and his experience is reflected in the build up of the sessions.

If being able to balance your academic goals with your social life was easy, everyone would be doing it. However, as many at the latest in the first weeks of university realize, it’s a struggle. The Student Achievement Program recognizes this challenges and gives you the tools to decompress a university curriculum into something suited exactly to your routines and needs.”

Lennart Schwung  Participant – STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2011

“In August, I arrived at the university, totally overwhelmed. I didn’t know where to start. Didn’t know how to study. Even didn’t know if I was capable of passing my courses. I joined a student association, which took a lot of my time- nice time though- but therefore some planning was necessary.”

The S.A.P helped me find a good balance between my social life and my studies. Work hard, play hard. I enjoyed every session of the S.A.P and felt motivated to rearrange the way that I was working and thinking. I passed all my courses this year (with a nice average), spent plenty of time with my friends, family and sorority. I even had time to work out – joined a rowing association and went to the gym. Thank you Tobias for teaching me how to enjoy and plan every minute of my day.”

“I will be short about my experience with the S.A.P. program. I had never been a great planner before participating in S.A.P.. After Tobias provided me with a simple technique during one of the workshop sessions I have been able to plan better in situations where I felt pressured by deadlines. This was my biggest lesson I took from the S.A.P.”

Anonymous Participant, STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2010

“The S.A.P program gets you to take a good hard look at yourself. Where are you, and where do you want to go? The S.A.P course then helps you take steps, and form habits in order for you to reach your goal. Not only that, but it is also very nurturing as a personal development course, and you may want to follow up on it through doing more reading like “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “Who Moved My Cheese?” or make you want to read blogs at www.stevepavlina.com. Since it is also free, I urge you to make the most of it, and come to the classes. You’ve got nothing to lose! As for me: 60 credits, a chilled out study life, and no obligatory resits. Thanks Tobias ;)”

Iemke Postma – Participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2010

“The S.A.P. helped me a lot with my development in my studies. We learned about setting goals, creating good habits in study behavior and we learned about learning. Tobias’ way of working and teaching is very inspiring and the STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM opened new doors for me to great experiences. The things we learned and practiced helped me to get into an international honors program, so I would recommend it to anyone. Because, regardless of how good you think you already are, you will get better”

Simon van Oort – Participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2010

“Especially in the first months of my studies I was distracted by all that student life encompassed and offered, which even for me being a usually self- motivated person was a tempting time. The trainer helped me to get back on track, organize myself better, realize my goals and start working towards them in a more productive way than before.”

Vijoleta Gordeljevic, Participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2010

“Sometimes when you start a journey, your destination may not be very clear and choosing among the different paths that can lead you there is difficult. I believe the S.A.P. course is a valuable guide in not just reaching your goals, but also being able to look back and be convinced that there couldn’t have been any other way that would provide you with more successful outcomes. Even if you think you know where you are headed, S.A.P. lessons will prove their worth whenever you feel lost or realize that the path you’ve been traveling for so long is not the road that will take you farthest. This helpful guide is a genuine opportunity for success, will you invest your time and effort to exploit it?”

“Before participating in the Student Achievement Program, I hardly thought I was able to pass my first IBA year with sufficient ECTS. However, Tobias showed me in a very motivational, interesting and inspiring way that everything is possible, and that even I was able to pass the first year with excellent grades. For that reason, I modified my goals during the S.A.P. course and I actually performed way above these new goals. Tobias showed me that everything is possible; you just have to go for it and keep on trying, even if you don’t reach your goals at once. What might not be realistic now, can be in a few years from now!“

Nicky Kroon, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2010

“For many students, myself included, starting your studies is a new and exciting period which comes with numerous new impulses and opportunities.  Personally, I was fully of ambition and wanted to achieve all I possibly could during my short time at university. Still, it is easy to get lost in the maze of your studies, social life and extracurricular activities.

For me, this is where S.A.P. comes in. It allowed me to take a step back, look at the goals I wanted to achieve and structure myself accordingly.  While the many direct advises Tobias gave were useful and interesting, it is newly acquired insight in my goals and possibilities that personally highlighted my S.A.P. experience.

And that is perhaps the greatest achievement of Tobias within this program:  each and every person takes something different away,  depending on their ambitions, capabilities and goals.  You learn valuable personal lessons that will serve you well for the rest of your lifetime.”

“I came to Erasmus University with few awareness of how to set my student life. It is S.A.P. that enlightened me about all the possibilities in my near future, namely the exchange, internships, side jobs, the tutoring, or the master degree. What’s more, it’s not only about the method of study and time management, but also on goal setting and motivation. I can always find that I get more than I expected from this program and I am convinced to believe that you will, too!”

Sherry Huang – participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2009

“During the first trimester, a lot of things were changed in comparison to high school and it was a busy and chaotic time. I found S.A.P. very useful because of the following reasons: First of all, I didn’t know what to expect and how hard I had to work to achieve a certain grade or pass it. What I liked as well, is to hear and see how other people of bachelor 1 perceived it, and that they had the same problems sort of calmed me. S.A.P. helped me to find more guidance and structure in my school life in that period. At the end of trimester 1, Tobias helped me with scheduling and that was actually the most useful of everything :). Then I noticed, that you could get a lot done, if you handled it well. Before, I had trouble with that. Nowadays, still a bit, however it has become much better!”

Nadine Kooiker – participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2009

“After I came to Rotterdam, I wanted to make sure my studies go well. I didn’t know what to expect so I was very satisfied with explanations and tips and tricks from Tobias on how to pass all years smoothly. But this was not everything. In S.A.P., I learnt also how to manage my time efficiently and correctly set priorities for future months and years. I would advise every student to take part in S.A.P. since it was very enriching experience.”

Bohumil Vosalik – participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2009

I have been to all the S.A.P. sessions and it really helped me to be more organized. But in my opinion, the most important thing I have learned during these sessions is: facing what consumes you is the only way to be free. You see, when I started the S.A.P. program, I didn’t want to face the workload I was facing as first year student, because I was “afraid” of being overwhelmed by it. But the sessions taught me on how to face the workload without “fear”. Now I can be free!

Christophe Augrandjean, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2009

“When I signed up for the S.A.P., I had very minimal expectations; this however, changed immediately. From the very first workshop, the S.A.P. proved to be so much more than a mere programme. It became a motivational tool that encouraged me to realise my potential and even dare to surpass it. It taught me the vital skills of self-discipline and organisation through very practical solutions. All in all, the S.A.P. is a brilliant opportunity for self-development and should be grasped with both hands.”

Tooba Arshad, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2008

“When I signed up for the S.A.P., I was in a space of ‘let’s see where this takes me’ and I must say that each session brought something new to my life. I have had a lot of training in my life and this training was really practical and hands on. I would recommend it for anyone who is up for big things in life and doesn’t want to be stopped by things.”

Saskia Pybus, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2008

“First of all I would like to thank you for this amazing experience. I learned a lot of practical tools that are very useful, but above all it was the emotional side of S S.A.P. that carried me throughout the first trimester of IBA.  After every single course, I left with a feeling of high self-esteem and confidence, which reflected in a better study behaviour and motivation.

I wish you all the best with your future projects, and thank you for giving us -the S.A.P. group 2008- this great opportunity!”

Chloe Cuypers, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2008

“Prior to the Student Achievement Program I was trying hard to live up to my ambitions but this proved very hard in hectic student life. During the S.A.P. workshops, Tobias challenged us in many areas. We were, for example, to think deeply about the goals we want to achieve during our time at RSM and more important: we made a plan of how to reach them – something that still encourages me to make the most of every single day. Moreover, we actively examined how we spent our time on a daily base, only to realize that time is not something you have, but something you make – a very valuable philosophy, and only one of the few Tobias provided us with.

In the end, I strongly recommend this course to every first year student because over the past months, S.A.P. really helped me with my studies. Moreover, the workshops proved very useful in dealing with other areas of my life. I am very proud of what I have reached and I strongly believe there is much more to come in the near future. Thank you very much Tobias!”

M. De Haas, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2008

“Joining the S.A.P. was one of the first decisions I made in Rotterdam. Not knowing what the program was actually about, I was attracted by the rumours about a former student who is able to motivate, guide and sometimes even enlighten his fellows. This young man was Tobias. Some of the stories turned out to be just rumours others the inspiring truth. So I spent one afternoon every week together with a group of fellow students who where as curious as I was. We learned about goals one can have and how to achieve them. We started pondering about our future at and after the university. He taught us methods of time management in theory and showed us how to apply them in practice. We were always guided through the material by fabulous stories between real life experience and philosophy. Whether this course is a perfect example of adverse selection or a real success, experience has proven that this group of students I spent my afternoons with will outperform the average of its year by far. Besides the very interesting and useful content you get to know talented people and probably win a mentor maybe even a friend for the time to come. Months after I completed the program I am still in touch with Tobias. He offers help and advice where ever he can. Furthermore his network of eager minded fellow students and friends is always open for your questions and concerns. It was my first decision to join the S.A.P. program and I can highly recommend making it your first as well.”

“I was very skeptical before I applied to take part in the S.A.P. course, as I thought, that I wouldn’t learn anything new there. However, I gave S.A.P. a try and I have to say that actually, in every single workshop I learnt something new and interesting – about myself, my motivation and my goals. So, yes, I really recommend this program to ambitious students, especially to skeptical ones.”

René Kulik, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2007

“What the S.A.P. did for me, was to get me from partying to studying when I had to. It taught me that it’s ok to party, but sometimes you just need to make other choices and Tobias showed me some tools, like the whiteboard to do this very easily and efficiently. 😉

The best thing about the S.A.P. and the reason why everyone should do it, Is because you meet the most motivated people in your year. These are the people you will see on several occasions making more of an effort than others and it’s nice to have a network of people who get you further in life.”

“When I applied for the program I decided I wanted to pass my bachelor with a GPA of 8.0. So when I noticed there was a motivation course available I decided to register. I have attended most of the workshops and I can recommend it to any of you!

I have learned quite a deal during the course. I learned to be consistent and not to give up when you don’t reach your goal at once. Something else that stuck to me was to use colours in your scheme: I have a very colourful whiteboard by now!

There will also be things you already know. But knowing them doesn’t mean you practise them! Being reminded of how to motivate yourself and listening to inspiring stories made me perform so much better. I have not managed to get a GPA of 8.0 yet, but one of the lessons is that you don’t give up and keep on trying. With my current GPA of 7,3 I know I will get there!

I hope you will accomplish your goals as well, because anything is possible! Tobias is a great teacher, a motivator and inspirer and he will help you. So make sure you’ll be there: it is an investment for life!”

Elmy Sarrucco, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2006

“Coming to Holland was a great experience for me, new university new friends, goals I wanted to accomplish. All of that could have been a lot different without the S.A.P. program. The S.A.P. forced me to think about my goals and to see where I want to be and where I want to get in my college years. This thought exercise together with the learned art of (backwards) planning, are powerful tools that enhance your chances of realizing your full potential. Great help great tools not only for school but also for life.”

Yonathan Friedman, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2006

“Being a high school graduate about to enter student life I did not know what to expect. I hoped everything would turn out well, and that I would like IBA, university life and everything else that I would encounter. The most important lesson I learned from this program, apart from the many psychological insights concerning the human mind, which I was not consciously aware of, is that I am responsible for all my results in life. Aim for what you want, and if you really want it, you will get it. It seems obvious, but everything does once you have learned it. There are still many things I want to do, I hope to be able to do, and am not sure how I am going to do it. However, I do not focus on whether I can do it or not, because I know I can if I really want it. I try to ask myself the question if I really want it and why.”

Zvezde Klingenberg, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2007

“The S.A.P. course has opened my eyes; it showed me that a lot is possible when you want it, but the biggest eye-opener for me was that there were many other students that had a clear vision of what they wanted, while I, at the time, did not. STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM helped me to see my own goals and achieve them as well.

Currently I am doing two studies (IBA and IBEB), I am in two honors classes (ERIM and economics bachelor), I am in the board of a sports association, and finally I have a part-time job. All of this I combine with having a lot of fun with my friends and my girlfriend. S.A.P. has given my valuable tools to help me achieve all these things!”

“I took part in the Student Achievement Programme last year and found it very inspiring. Although I already had the feeling that I was a well preparing and motivated student I sought for improvement, which I found in the S.A.P.

Tobias, our tutor, was extremely motivated to improve our ways of studying and conveyed the material in a charming and interesting way. He encouraged us to think honestly about ourselves but was also open for criticism of his course.

Although some sessions seemed like I already knew it, they helped me understand myself and my fellow students better. Simply pick those parts of the material you regard helpful and you will benefit already. I can recommend the STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM to everyone who thinks there is something to improve about his organization and motivation!”

“I took away many useful tools for my studies and can definitely recommend the S.A.P. workshop to anybody who wants to improve his/her study routines.”

Bastian Steinbach, Participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2006

“The beginning of my first year was full of expectations and excitement for the new upcoming challenge that I was about to face. It all seemed amazing and interesting, and I was definitely willing to get the most out of all that I was about to do. Nevertheless, I was still slightly insecure about how to deal with all the many new things that I was starting to face. My first reaction was to look for some sort of guidance, and luckily enough I found the S.A.P.. I must admit I didn’t attend all the workshops, since I had a few inconveniences along my way, but the ones I  did attend to were certainly of great help to  me.

I heard from Tobias many times that we had to be up for it, and that perhaps courage and intelligence were not enough. We needed to have more…”You guys wanna be ahead of other people, right? Then start now! Organise yourselves in the first place, and don’t forget…BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!” It may sound like a superfluous repetition, but once you are facing the real exam, the speedy heart beat before that import presentation, you will see how valuable the times were that  you spent in that room with Tobias in front of you! =)

For all of the ones are going and not going to attend S.A.P. workshops I wish you all the best, and especially a lot of success!”

Giovanna Sanchez, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2006

“S.A.P. helped me focus on my academic goals and organize my schedule in a logical way, thanks Tobias.”

Guy Ben-Moshe, participant STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM 2006

“Indulgence into university life doesn’t only bring with it a certain degree of freedom but more than anything it truly challenges ones ability to withstand constant pressure and be able to sustain good performance in every aspect of one’s learning.

It truly gives definition to the word individualism. RSM Erasmus University like any other top business school around the world brings that pressure and squeezes the best out of you in abundance. Having said that one needs to be mentally very strong, motivated, focused while at the same time planned and regular. Academics apart, the S.A.P. is truly a bonus for any student who wants to achieve the highest while at university because this particular program doesn´t impart academic knowledge but knowledge itself to understand the core of academics. It helps one and helped me prepare myself mentally for the task ahead and gave me the tips and tricks to be able to tweak my performance by instilling simple discipline in my life.

The S.A.P. on the very grass root level is all about being able to understand that each one has equal potential and therefore instead of looking for winners outside oneself there is a need for each one of us to look into ourselves and recognize our potential to be the very best in any and everything we want to be. Personally I would recommend a dosage of this program to each student who is looking to get the best out of him/herself because while helping you academically it simultaneously intrigues your thinking and develops the kind of confidence any successful university student needs in today’s highly competitive environment.”
